My oldest daughter just turned 8 last month and I am racking my brain trying to come up with some Christmas ideas. We have so many Barbies and Polly's we just can't handle anymore. She has an entire bookcase full of books and tons of craft projects. I want to get her some educational, but FUN toys, activities or projects. Nothing too mainstream like Webkinz (we are already owners of a few). Some original ideas would be great. Thanks!

Teach her how to bake, like cookies.
I would say Easy Bake oven but I don’t know if those are safe anymore.
My girls used to like to put frosting on cookies and decorate them.
Do they still have Make-It-And-Bake-It things?
They used to like making those plastic bugs and things and give them to their friends at school.
I just depends on what she is interested in.
Maybe get her interested in a collection of something.
Tinkertoys or Lincoln Logs to build things.
the V tech Vsmile is age appropriate and fun to play with
Leapfrog leapster my first computer is very educational and has a ton of different programs and has a lots of different age groups
ok i don’t know if they still have this stuff … but you know those little ovens that you teach your daughter how to make cookies and stuff ? or a perfume maker ? or a cotton candy maker ? i think the little oven is best …. i ALWAYS wanted one when i was little …
how about the fly pentop computer??? or an easy bake oven? a slurpee maker? cotton candy machine? leapster hand held video game system? v tech v-smile learning game console? Maybe take her to the toy store and let her show you some things she likes, then you will have an idea on what she wants. Also how about a bratz styling head?? My 8 year old cousin has one and she loooves it! its like a life-like head with real hair that you can style. You can do her hair, make up, and nails.
I bought my 8 year old daughter the Wii video game system for Christmas. I like it because it gets them up off of the couch to play some of the games. My daughter doesn’t even like Barbie or other dolls, they are basically unplayed with at the bottom of her toy box. She really likes her V-tech games (which teach spelling, math etc.) and board games like Cadoo. You should go to the web site for the Toy of the Year Award winners. They test all the new toys on kids. The award winners will have a sticker on the outside of the package when you go shopping at the toy store.
My 8-year-old girl loves board games (mastermind, boggle, pictionary, battleship, monopoly, mexican train dominos, clue, etc.). Every year for Christmas I get her a bin full of art supplies (always one of her favorite presents) with things like special paper, cray-pas, markers, jagged scizzors, colored pencils, glitter glue, tracing paper, collage materials, wooden shapes for painting, etc. She also loves outdoor stuff (kite, roller blades, ice skates, jump rope, pogo stick, stuff like that). You could get a pet, even a little one like a fish, or something like an ant farm or caterpillars that your raise to butterflies. Does she have a watch? Craft stores also have clocks that you can decorate for her to keep in her room. My daughter loves Snap-Circuits, which has lots of projects for building different kinds of electrical circuits. Building toys are also good (beyond blocks, try the big sets of wedgits with the cards that you try to replicate). Those little puzzle games you find in Barnes and Noble are also great … I can’t think of names offhand but one is trying to get a guy across the river by figuring out the right way to move the planks, another is I think called “Rush Hour” where you have to figure out how to move all the cars out of the way of one another. On the electronic front, my kids have a kid-proof digital camera that they love, and we also have a simple Dance Dance Revolution that just plugs into the tv (you can also get ones for game systems) — it’s a very active video game that involves moving around a lot. A journal is also a good choice for that age. 8-year-olds might like latch hook, as well (the only craft I was ever able to learn!).
If you go to the lego website they actually make lego’s for girls. I love the Ed Emberley books on drawing. Look at things people maybe consider for boys. I have an 8 yr old son and I know my 6 yr old daughter would love to have his snap circuits. Also all the spy type toys. There is a secret message writer with invisible ink and you can shoot your message with a tube. Laser trip wire. She’d love walkie talkies. Perfection . I’m trying to thing educational. Science experiment books. My kids still like playdoh. Remote control anything. I’d say maybe think a bit more boy-traditional. Mindware or mindwares.com has a lot of more science-type toys.
Anyway good luck..I have 2 girls and am always trying to cut down on girl-clutter too!
my daughter turned 9 in june and cant live wo her leapster!!!
