I cannot speak highly enough of the Leap Pad. My 4 year old loves it…and he’s really learned a great deal.

My wife’s kid loves her PS2 and the games we have on it for her! She’s just turned 5 and can read at the level of most 4th graders……and most of that’s because she wanted to play our role-playing games like Final Fantasy….and she DOES play them now!

Anything that keeps all their senses occupied, usually those with sounds and interactive functions.

It would be wonderful if these toys allow interaction with other people. One of such games we used to play is Uno. For the young ones they get to learn how to match cards of numbers/colours according to the rules, and also talk and learn to play fair with others, which is good.

My 5 yr old has both the Leap Pad and the V smile, neither of which does she really play with. For her, she just needs a pen and some paper, her imagination is just amazing, writing stories, sounding out the words and illustrating those stories to make her own books.

The computer can be a great educational toy (tool) for children, when supervised of course. Some of the on-line educational games are wonderful, also go to a PC store and buy some additional toys that connect right into the USP port.

The most important thing to remember is that all child’s play is educational video games aside.

A child learns from their environment. By giving your child toys (pretty much any) they learn cause and effect and work out all different emotional and educational issues. Learning to play a game. Using your imagination to play with pretend army soldiers and building a town out of lego are all things childen actually play and learn tremendous amouts from.

To answer your question accurately I’d need to know the ages.

In addition it depends on the childs interests. Not all children like the same things.

    Some childrens like building toys.
Some children like more imagniative toys.
Some children like books and puzzles etc.

What your child actually enjoys depends on your child
and the age of your child.

Some great choices aside from computer or video
games not deemed most effective educational tools
by most in the educational field are toys
that don’t make noise or run on batteries.

In fact it is important for children to learn
to gratify themself and use their brain as a tool
for enjoyment. That in itself is a great thing
for children to learn at a young age.

Some examples of great toys are:

Ages 1.5-3.5 large stacking pegs by lauri
Ages 3-5 Tubation (building tubes by Quercetti)
Ages 3-5 Lego especially the farm and other sets with realistic pieces the child can relate to.

Ages 2-4 puzzles that make sounds when done correctly.
Very encouraging to be rewarded for doing it correctly.
That is good for even children who usually wouldn’t do a puzzle.

Ages 3-8 best game of all time Zingo- picture recogniction
and word recognition. matching skills memory skills pre reading skills

Ages 8 and up (boys especially) electronic kits by the company elenco. Main one is called snap circuits and teaches how to make all sorts of circuits which the child
can later use in life. It is fun because the child makes fans and alarms, lights. All sorts of fun boy stuff!

Ages 3-9 a great puzzle game that promotes concentration and a million other skills are the mighty mind and super mind games. It’s a game that you have to figure out which shapes to fit in a specific picture without being told which to use.

Ages 6 and up- the think fun game line example: Rush hour, shape by shape. mind bending games.

    just some suggestions
